Assignment 14 - What Would Otherwise Go Unseen

These pictures show people that if they just looked around, they could easily find new and fun photos to take of any random thing. All that is needed is a keen eye and imagination. People wouldn't necessarily feel sorry for a drain pipe or a piece of rope, but it would make them realize that there is more than just these objects not being noticed in the world.

Landscape Composition

Placing my subject at different spots in the photo gives a different look and feel to the photo, depending on how the track ahead can change the feel when the subject is at a different spot. I felt that the dull lighting with the cloud emphasized the distance more. The light seemed to make the distance clearer and closer looking. The dull weather made the photo dreary looking. The sun lights up the photos and bring color and radiance to the photo.  I like the regular landscape photos better. When I take pictures of landscape, I don't feel limited as I do when I'm taking a picture of the railroad.

Landscape Photography (Assignment)

I think that all these photos have foreground, midground, and background. There is water, plants, and pole in the foreground, the watershed and walkway in the midground, and the trees and sky in the background. My eye definitely reads these pictures in a natural way. I found this spot opposite the Fraser River a few miles away from the city. I read this as a peaceful and natural environment. I feel that the foreground (including the water shed) gives a nice perspective to the picture. It keeps the eye concentrated on the water shed while the background lures the viewer's eyes to look into the distance. My favorite picture is the 12:30 pm shot. I mostly enjoy it because of the shadowing in the foreground and then the gradual brightness in the background. This leads the viewer's eyes upward to follow the light and see the rest of the photograph.

Animal Photographs-A Day with my Birds

My birds' eyes are a little bit too small to notice any catch light. The texture of their feathers are easily detectable in most of the pictures. I believe that in some of the pictures, such as the mug shot, I've captured personality in one of my birds. It was very hard to take a bunch of pictures of birds and turn it into a story because for the most part, my birds are not exactly the most enthusiastic animals.

Assignment 7: Photographing People with Dim Lighting

I took a picture with the flash and it brightened the entire area including the subject. This just added much more unwanted color in the subject's face. No flash in dim lighting is just perfect. I did not notice any change in the lighting with the reflector. I prefer to rely on camera settings and natural lighting then to use flash or a reflector.

Assignment 10 Selt-Portrait

If any person looked at these photos they might get the impression of seriousness. Me sitting on the chair reading a book makes it seems as if I'm really into the book. The mirror image is hard to explain. I think it shows that I'm trying to be cool. The baseball bat is easy to guess. Seeing that I took a picture of me swing a bat leads someone to the conclusion that I'm really into baseball. So not all the photos say the same thing. Each one has its own meaning.

Group Photos

I looked for things the unified the group (my parents) and I found that a picture of them reading together would be perfect since they both enjoy it. I feel that the different heights photo is more warm feeling. My mom wrapping her arms around my dad makes it feel like home.

Formal vs. Candid Photos

I prefer the Candid over the Semi-Formal. The Candid is a more natural view of the subject than the Semi-Formal. The Candid captures the subject doing an action that they enjoy and can relax in.

Photographing People with Soft Light

 I think that when the soft light is concentrated on about 3/4 of my subject's face, it makes the subject the most flattering. The right side of my subject's face shows the best because 3/4 of it is lighted up with soft light. Any shadows under the subject's eyes and nose aren't very noticeable anymore.
